Sydney, Australia - 06 January 2015 – Brother International Australia, a leading manufacturer in home sewing machines, is proud to announce the Australian winner of their 14th Annual Brother International Quilting Contest.
'The Brother International Quilting Contest is a creative initiative from Brother HQ in Japan for the Asia Pacific region designed to encourage participants to create an Eco themed quilt; the theme is inspired by Brother Earth which is Brother’s commitment to build a sustainable future.
"Laura Penuela, Marketing Manager, Home Sewing Machines at Brother International Australia said “We were overwhelmed by the quality of artworks that were submitted this year, this is the second year we have participated and we are very excited by the response and support from the Australian Quilting community. As a leading sewing machine manufacturer, Brother is very proud to make this event possible”.
The winner of the Australian component of the contest was Dale Robson of West Wollongong, NSW, with her magnificent and colourful artwork inspired by the black oil spiling across the Great Barrier Reef. The quilt represents the contrast between beauty and destruction, and is called “Black Tide”.
"Dale said, “There are a number of ecological threats to the wide variety of life supported by the Great Barrier Reef; this quilt represents just one. Over the last 3 decades there have been 283 oil spills in its waters, damaging the delicate ecosystem of the reef. Let’s protect our precious reef against the “black tide” so we can enjoy its beauty well into the future. “Black Tide" is a whole cloth quilt constructed on hand painted cotton sateen with a collage of fabrics, textiles and yarns. The oil spill is represented by black vinyl and metallic thread”.
This is the second time that Dale has taken part in the Brother International Quilting Contest; last year Dale was the overall Asia Pacific winner of the contest with her artwork “Cradle of Life”. Dale was very excited to receive this important award and specially thanked her family, friends and her two lovely cats who provided great inspiration.
The top 10 Australian quilts have also been chosen to join Asia Pacific entries in Tokyo and be part of the International Quilting Contest. A panel of Fashion College and Magazine Experts will judge all Asia Pacific entries and award a collective prize pool in excess of USD3, 500. The quilts will be judged during December and January; an overall winner will be then announced late January on the Brother Australia Facebook page.
