Brother Announces the Australian Winner of the 13th Annual Brother International Quilting Contest

Quilt Makers from all over Australia were invited to The 13th Annual Brother International Quilting Contest to create an Eco themed quilt and compete for a new Dreamweaver VQ3000 valued at $4,499

Sydney, Australia - 25 November 2013–Brother, a leading manufacturer in home sewing machines, has recently announced the Australian winner of their 13th Annual Brother International Quilting Contest.

The Brother International Quilting Contest is a creative initiative from Brother Japan for the Asia Pacific region designed to encourage participants to create an Eco themed quilt; the theme is inspired on Brother Earth which is Brother’s commitment to play a part in building a society with better sustainable development.

Prizes included a brand new Brother DreamWeaver VQ3000 valued at $4,499 for the Australian entry judged best, plus a collective prize pool in excess of USD3,500 for the Asia Pacific winners.

Laura Penuela, Marketing Manager, Home Sewing Machines at Brother International Australia says “It was incredible to see the outstanding and highly creative artworks that entered the Quilting Contest, this was Australia’s first year to participate in this magnificent Asia-Pacific event and we are very pleased with the terrific response we received. As a leading sewing machine manufacturer, Brother is proud to make this event possible”.

The winner of the Australian component of the contest was Julie Harding of Toormina, NSW, with her stunning quilt inspired in the background view of a pond with its water plants and a magnified section of a frog, the artwork is called “Habitat”.

Julie said, “Frog populations in an area can be used as an indication of that areas eco health. They often go unnoticed, hiding in the vegetation. This quilt shows a background view of a pond with its water plants and a magnified section of a frog, one of the inhabitants, in the foreground. Raw edged applique has been used in the background with curved piecing used for the magnified frog section. Freehand machine quilting has been used throughout quilt. Hand dyed and commercial cottons, cotton wadding and poly/cotton threads have been used in the construction of the quilt”.

Julie was encouraged to enter by her Brother Dealer; Graham and Paula Roder at Creative Home Sewing in Coffs Harbour, she was very overwhelmed and excited as this is the first time that she enters a quilting competition.

The top 8 Australian quilts were also chosen to join Asia Pacific entries in Tokyo and be part of the International Quilting Contest. A panel of Fashion College and Magazine Experts will judge all Asia Pacific entries and award a collective prize pool in excess of USD3, 500, the quilts will be judged during December and an overall winner will be then announced in January on the Brother Australia website (www.brother.com.au).
